Abstract

This workshop will examine a series of short texts and images representing nineteenth-century birds in different forms: natural history, specimen skins in museums, and poems. The workshop will pose two questions about the history of birds: what stories can we uncover from natural history texts and archives that bring to the surface the historical violence perpetuated differently against people and animals? And what disturbances to human-animal relations are registered by nineteenth-century poets?

Texts will be provided and no advance reading necessary.
