How Vulnerable is our World? Ecology, History, and Slow Hope for the Future

What we fear today is very different from what we feared a few centuries ago, explains environmental historian Christof Mauch. We are no longer afraid of the wildness of the mountains, of the torrents of the seas, or of attacks from fierce animals. Instead we fear the end of non-renewable resources, the breakdown of the electric grid, the expansion of deserts, the loss of islands, and the pollution of air and water. We realize that humanity’s progress and technological success have come at a high price - extreme vulnerability of life on the planet. How vulnerable is our world? What can we learn from history? And where could hope for a more sustainable future come from?
