CEH participates in International EH Networking Event in Utrecht

On February 1 and 2, 2024, CEH director Heather Swanson represented AU’s centre at a major international EH Networking Event, organized and hosted by Utrecht University’s Critical Pathways community and its environmental humanities network. The event brought together representatives from leading environmental humanities centers in Europe, including from Sweden, Norway, Germany, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, and England.

The event included presentations and discussions around three themes – collaborations/interdisciplinarity, teaching, and research – with an eye toward sharing experiences and ideas that can inspire all of us in our efforts to further develop our own programming. It was exciting to see that multiple universities have developed successful 1- and 2-year MA programs in the environmental humanities, and it was productive to discussion ways to cultivate diverse impact pathways for the field – via public institutions, such as museums, but also via efforts to collaborate with natural science colleagues, to engage with NGOs, and to reach out to policymakers.

The event culminated with a propsal to establish a European EH network and to hold another gathering in 2025 (tentatively scheduled for Stockholm).
